The Map / Michele Guieu

Commissioned by ZERO1 with support from the James Irvine Foundation

This short video is about a boy describing a piece of circuit board like it is the map of Sunnyvale, where he has just moved. Then the boy flips the circuit board and describes the other side: an underworld full of traps and bad guys.

‘The Map’ is part of a series of short experimental documentaries Guieu have made about childhood: Boxes (2012), about kids geocaching in Silicon Valley; Under My Bed (2011), about kids talking about the monsters hidden under their beds at night; The Fort (2011), about kids constructing a fort for the fairies with twigs and pine cones; Tell me Something you Remember (2010), about the making of a drawing.

Bio

Originally from southern France, Michele Guieu spent her teenage years in Senegal (Africa), travelled and moved often. She is a graduate of the École Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs de Paris (MA Graphic Design and Multimedia), Paris, France. She has been a graphic designer for many years when she lived in Paris, where she worked for non-profit organizations and museums. She also exhibited her work in Paris and Copenhagen, before moving to the US in 2000. Guieu is an installation artist and her work incorporates video, drawings, digital photography and paintings. Also prints, furniture, decals, and found objects. Some parts of the installations, like the murals, are ephemeral. Drawings and paintings go usually by series that she re-organizes and develops through time.

The “notes” Guieu takes on a daily basis - photos and video footage – and then transforms digitally, constitute the base of her work. Through her installations, her work weaves personal events (the landscapes where she lived and that she visited, her family, are recurrent themes) with much larger ones (her take on biodiversity, ongoing wars, Evolution). Her work has been shown in exhibitions at venues such as Mac Paris (France), Currents 2012: the Santa Fe International New Media Festival, the San Diego Museum of Art, The California Center for the Arts, Oceanside Museum of Art, Rosalux Gallery. She had solo exhibitions at Musée des Merveilles (France), Art Produce Gallery, The San Diego Art Institute. She was invited to the "Summer Salon Series" at the San Diego Museum of Art in 2010 and has participated in the SubZERO festival in 2012.
