We are seeking proposals for both existing and new video pieces to be projected on our Urban Screen during the weekend-long outdoor exhibition that will launch with the ZERO1 Biennial's Friday night street festival. This exhibition will inaugurate the new ZERO1 Emerging Artist Network, and the artists chosen to receive micro-grants will be invited to participate in a weekend of events dedicated to the development of this new organization.

Video's will be projected on the outdoor Urban Screen located at 300 South First Street, as part of the larger outdoor exhibition covering the three blocks of South First Street, reaching from San Carlos to Reed Streets. About ZERO1 Emerging Artist Network

The ZERO1 Emerging Artist Network will launch this September during the opening weekend of the ZERO1 2012 Biennial Seeking Silicon Valley. Exhibiting artists will be invited to participate in a weekend program of talks, workshops and events that will launch with the presentation of their work during the Friday night street festival. The outdoor exhibition will cover three city blocks of the SoFA District along 1st Street between San Carlos and Reed Streets in downtown San Jose, and selected works will remain throughout the following day.

As California has become the locus for an increasing concentration of innovative art programs, as well as independent artistic collectives that are rethinking creativity at the crossroads of art, science, and technology, young artists from across the world are coming here to join in this efflorescence of fertile spaces dedicated to new artistic possibilities. Through ZERO1's experience working with emerging artists, many who are enrolled in or recent graduates of MFA programs, we identified a need for presenting and networking opportunities.

The ZERO1 Emerging Artist Network exhibition is a new platform for showcasing the work of emerging artists. Realizing the importance of the student and garage-inventor to the phenomenon of Silicon Valley, ZERO1 is committed to increase support for emerging talent. Micro-grants will be juried by a high profile group of Bay Area based curators from partner institutions.

Jury & Selection Process

At least 10 videos will be chosen for screening on the Urban Screen, and the call will be juried by a panel of Bay Area curators, gallerists, and critics.

While none of the following are requirements, the jury will be asked to select video projects that have successfully addressed the following:

  • Content: The Emerging Artist Network street exhibition will respond to the Biennial thematic Seeking Silicon Valley through a focus on artworks involved in the conceptualization and formation of community and place. Whether existing or new work, the video proposal should engage these concepts.
  • Presentation Feasibility: The proposal should take into account the feasibility for successful projection on the Urban Screen.

Proposals should include

  • A written proposal or description (max. of 3 pages) including sketches or images as applicable.
  • Bio (max. 1 page)
  • Examples of past work with title, medium, date, credits, and description. Please provide links to no more than 10 images and 1 video of past, preferably related work.
  • Budget (max. 1 page)
